Player Homework

Work hard. Dream big.

The Goal Is 'Ball Mastery'

The Tools: Fast Footwork and 1v1 Moves

The goal for all players is to master the ball. This is especially concerned in executing dribbling technique at high speeds or in tight areas. The actual execution of a movement is always in the realm of technique training. The challenge of "when and why" to use a move is in the tactics and game intelligence of a player. In this section, the focus is going to be in the "how to". Teaching dribbling technique is separated in to: Fast footwork and 1v1 Moves. Fast footwork is not necessarily applicable to the game in a sense that these techniques themselves will not produce success. Fast footwork is a series of techniques that are designed to enhance the player's comfortability with the ball by creating as many touches and repetitions as possible in short periods. It also helps develop players with their coordination. Primarily, this is a preparation phase of 1v1 moves, where the technique is broken down in parts and the 1v1 move component is repeated over and over again.

1v1 Moves are tools that players use in order to beat opponents off the dribble and penetrate opposing defenses. 1v1 moves are divided in to two catergories: Fakes & Feints and Turns.

But first, the fast footwork exercises:

1v1 Moves

The basic concepts of dribbling must always be included such as keeping the ball as close to the feet as possible in order to maintain control of the ball, using the correct part of the feet to contact the ball in order to maintain balance, and trying to maximize the use of the lower part of peripheral vision to see the ball in order to keep as much of the field in sight as possible during the execution of the move.

The following arsenal of moves have been separated in to two categories: Turns and Fakes/Feints. The purpose of the use of turns is to shield the ball away from the defender and change direction into the open space. The purpose of fakes/feints is to create space either to the side of an opponent and/or by using a change of pace so the player can run, shoot or pass the ball.

The 4 Stages 1v1 Moves

Stage 1 - Drive the Ball

The dribbler must attack the defender by driving the ball at the defender. The dribbler must dictate terms by being the aggressor in the 1v1 duel.

Stage 2 -  "The Sell"

The attacker must sell the defender on a fake or a feint to get the defender to commit to an action. The tip or tell of the defender is usually a lean or a shift of the body that signals the open space.

Stage 3 -  "The Acceleration"

After "the sell", players must take the open space  by changing their speed off the dribble. As the player dribbles, he/she must win the "inside shoulder battle" with the defender.

Stage 4 - "The Finish"

There are a number of different results coming from players beating defenders off the dribble such as retaining possession, a completed pass, a shot or a cross.

Coaches must keep in mind the 4 Stages Of 1v1 Moves when teaching the mechanics of the moves. As stated above, 1v1 moves fall into two categories: Turns and Fakes/Feints.
